Endometriosis, popularly known as “chocolate cyst”; It is a gynecological disorder that occurs when the endometrial tissue, which covers the inner surface of the uterus and is shed with the menstrual period, goes out of the uterus and grows. Endometriosis, which can cause female infertility, can be seen in the intestines, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. When the chocolate cyst settles in the ovarian region, it can both reduce the quality of the eggs, damage the functions of the fallopian tubes and lead to the formation of intra-abdominal adhesions.

Causes of Endometriosis

Like many diseases, there is no single or definite reason for chocolate cyst. However, it is accepted that various risk factors increase the risk of endometriosis formation. Back bleeding, genetic predisposition and immune system problems are among the risk factors for endometriosis.

What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?

Endometriosis can cause many different symptoms. The severity of their symptoms can vary from person to person. The most specific effect is excessively painful menstrual periods. Pain and cramps may occur in the pelvic, lower back and abdominal regions. Chocolate cyst can also cause pain during sexual intercourse. Apart from all these, it can also cause an increase in the amount of bleeding, bloating during menstrual periods and nausea.

Endometriosis is one of the most important factors that cause female infertility. The presence of chocolate cyst is detected in most of the women who have gynecological examination due to infertility complaint. During the diagnosis of the disease, various diagnostic methods such as pelvic examination, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, laparoscopy may be required.

How Is Chocolate Cyst Treated?

The treatment of chocolate cyst can be carried out in different ways depending on whether the person wants to have a child, the severity of the complaints and age. In cases where the patient does not experience any complaints, it is also possible to apply for follow-up treatment. However, if the patient has a very serious pain problem, if the symptoms cannot be controlled with drugs and the quality of life decreases, then medication and/or surgical methods come to the fore.

Medical treatment and surgical methods can be used in the treatment of chocolate cyst. Usually, drug treatment is tried first, and if no results are obtained, surgery is resorted to. In some cases, simultaneous application of both treatment methods may be necessary. Laparoscopic surgery provides successful results in chocolate cyst patients who want to have a baby.
